Southampton Proposal

Note, this is only a proposal at present, but we need to get an idea of if this works and costs.

Please fill in details:

  • How much will it cost you to get to Southampton?
  • Do you need us to book you somewhere to stay? Please indicate which nights if you can judge from travel plans - e.g. Fri-Sun
  • If yes, would you be willing to share a room to reduce costs?
  • Is 6-8 of May (present on at least most of 7 and 8 May) possible for you?
  • Is 13-15 of May (present on at least most of 14 and 15 May) possible for you?

(For the dates you can indicate 'Preferred' if both are possible, but one is better than the other)

You can still add your name below if you want to come but did not say so yet (I just copied the names from above so far...)

Venue

The University of Southampton department of Engineering and Computer Science can offer us rooms, WiFi access and free lunches on either weekend from Friday to Sunday. They would also like us to give a presentation to students about KDE, probably on the Friday at some point.

More info on Southampton as a city is on Wikipedia.

Travel

Airports:

  • Southampton (IATA:SOU) with links to Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Paris-CDG and a few others
  • London Heathrow (LHR) links to Southampton via the London Underground and then a 1:20 train journey
  • London Gatwick (LGW) links to Southampton via trains (a few direct, most with one change)
  • Bournemouth (BOH) airport has links to Spain, Portugal and Italy and is about 1 hour from Southampton by train.

Port:

  • Portsmouth ferry port provides access to various ports in northern France and is then a short train journey from Southampton

International Trains:

  • You could take the Eurostar through the channel tunnel to London and then the London Underground and train to Southampton. However, this is unlikely to be the cheapest option.

Travel in UK:

  • The Trainline can help you plan train journeys. The relevant stations are Southampton Central and Southampton Airport Parkway (both are on the main train line to London and bus route to the university)
  • LHR and LGW are also accessible by coach (e.g those run by National Express).

Accommodation

There are various budget hotels quite close to or on University-run bus routes to the university. I'm looking into these at present. There are also other options such as guest houses.

More details to follow. Normally accommodation is group-booked for sprints, so this will likely be arranged for you.

Venue ideas

If you know somewhere that might be willing to host, please note it here

UK - there are some companies and universities I (Stu) could talk to, but only tentative ideas

  • Southampton - offer subject to availability of a room, likely refreshments and a potential event introducing KDE to students

Madison, WI (USA): The University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I (Oriol) study/work could offer a room for us to work and grant attendees Guest NetIDs so that they can access the university's wireless internet during the sprint. As for accommodation, there is a hostel in downtown Madison with dorm beds starting at $22 per night per person, and there are B&Bs and other more expensive options. Once the dates and number of people are confirmed, I could look into other accommodation options for at least some of the attendees(staying with me, friends, etc.) if necessary. Regarding transportation, Madison is in the Midwest. There is a three-hour bus drive north from Chicago (buses leave every 1:30 hours from Chicago's O'Hare airport) or another 55-minute flight to get here.

Berlin - Perhaps it could be hosted at c-base. It's located in downtown Berlin next to a youth hostel/two star hotel (A&O Berlin Mitte which is less than 1 km away from c-base, and costs about 25 € per night). Furthermore, there are restaurants and supermarkets in the same street. The U-bahn station is ~500 m away.
KDAB Offices?

Topics

  • prepare for Desktop Summit (this would be insanely valuable on its own as

very little has happened on the KDE side so far)

  • Join the Game (Supporting Membership program) needs a big push
  • finish promo booklet (assuming we can get some of the folks who've been

leading the charge here to come)

  • create some wiki pages for important repeatable promo tasks
    • ensure we have an up to date page with boilerplate slides for use at conferences, LUG meetings, etc to introduce people to KDE so people don't have to reinvent the wheel every time
    • a page for all things related to conferences that people might need, like having all source files for flyers, stickers, install media, etc in one spot
    • organize pages for major initiatives like ISMP ("Join the game") and the upcoming corporate sponsorship campaign
  • other misc tasks (mailing list cleanup, other wiki organization)
  • (pgquiles) get better exposure and more involvement for Windows/Mac efforts. For both users and developers. Non-Linux platforms badly need more developers, and Windows and Mac could bring many new developers in.
  • (pgquiles) "Sell" (advertise, not $$$) kdesupport, kdelibs, kdepimlibs and calligralibs (former kofficelibs) to third-parties as just one more module to Qt. Important: commercial support. See my mail to the kde-promo list for more info.
  • team building....in other words: meet each other in person, drink beers

(or whatever you prefer), hang out

  • pushing KDE EDU (esp. at schools)
  • discuss the functioning of the promo/marketing teams and how we can improve in the future (tasks, responsibilities, communication, decisionmaking)
