What Calligra is

Calligra is a project within the larger KDE community to develop Free graphic art and office software.

We started as a split from KOffice after all developers agreed to disagree on a goal. After the split the KOffice project chose to narrow its focus while we decided to broaden it.

In order to achieve our broad focus, the software is highly modular and can be classified into three main categories:

  • Calligra Engine: This is the back-end that powers our end-user focused applications. Calligra Engine is explicitly written to be reused by other developers in their software. Being available under GNU LGPL v2.1 or later we do not dictate how the host software has to be licensed. Calligra Engine is currently being deployed by Nokia with their well received N9 and N950 smartphones.
  • Calligra Suite: Calligra Suite is our flagship product. Available for desktop computers running a variety of operating systems, Calligra Suite makes available the full range of features Calligra Engine offers.
  • Calligra Active: Calligra Active is our front-end for tablet computers. Calligra Active is mainly meant to be a document viewer with only limited editing capabilities that works hand in hand with Plasma Active by other fellow KDE community members.
